Lesson 2: Bet/Vet

>HOME >EDUCATION >Hebrew >Lesson 2: Bet/Vet

Vet
ב
V
Bet
B

In this lesson, we're looking at the second letter of the Hebrew alef-bet, which happens to have two forms:

  • When there is a dot in the middle, we have the letter Bet (בּ), which is pronounced like the /b/ in "boy".
  • When the middle dot is missing, this letter is Vet (ב), which is pronounced like the /v/ in "vase".

Combining Bet / Vet with Vowel Markers

Recall the vowel markers introduced in the previous lesson. As with alef, these markers can be added to Bet and Vet.

Kubutz
oo
Holam
oh
Hiriq
ee
Segol
eh
Tzere
eh
Patach
ah
Kamatz
ah

Let's take a look at a few combinations:

Bet
kubutz
בֻּ
boo
Bet
holam
בֹּ
boh
Bet
hiriq
בִּ
bee
Bet
segol
בֶּ
beh
Bet
tzere
בֵּ
beh
Bet
patach
בַּ
bah
Bet
kamatz
בָּ
bah

When bet decorated with one of the marks above, the vowel sound will come after the b sound. The table below explains the combinations shown above:

Ba
  • Bet with kamatz (בָּ) is pronounced "bah", like the sound a sheep makes.
  • Bet with patach (בַּ) also sounds like "bah".
Be
  • Bet with tzere (בֵּ) sounds like the "beh" in "bed".
  • Bet with segol (בֶּ) also sounds like "beh".
Bi
  • Bet with hiriq (בִּ) is pronounced "bee", like the insect.
Bo
  • Bet with holam (בֹּ) sounds like the word "bow", like the ribbons on top of a gift.
Bu
  • Bet with kubutz (בֻּ) is pronounced "boo", like the sound you make when you want to scare someone, "Boo!"

In the same way, vowel markers can be added to the letter vet:

בֹ
voh

בִ
vee
Vet
segol
בֶ
veh

בֵ

בַ
vah

בָ
vah

The table below explains the combinations shown above:

Va
  • Vet with kamatz (בָ) indicates the "vah" sound as in the word "varnish" and "aardvark".
  • Vet with patach (בַ) also sounds like "vah".
Ve
  • Vet with tzere (בֵ) sounds like the "veh" in "veterinarian".
  • Vet with segol (בֶ) also sounds like "veh".
Vi
  • Vet with hiriq (בִ) makes the "vee" sound as in the words "movie" and "obvious".
Vo
  • Vet with holam (בֹ) sounds like the "voh" in "vote".
Vu
  • Vet with kubutz (בֻ) is pronounced "voo" as in the word "rendezvous".

There's one more marker you should be aware of when reading Hebrew: two vertical dots under a letter is called a sh'va ( ְְ ).

Vet
sh'va
בְ
V
Bet
sh'va
בְּ
B

Don't worry, this is an easy one. Sh'va is just a way of marking that a letter has no vowel. It sounds just like the plain letter. Sh'va serves an important purpose, but for right now, it's safe to ignore it.

Let's practice using Bet and Vet in the following exercises...
